This Week’s Featured Watch #73 – the Leopard Chronometer

The very early 1970s marked what was probably the peak of Citizen’s mechanical watch production, and their ‘Leopard’ line offered a range of quality models, all high beat, and (for mechanicals) capable of very accurate time-keeping. Often marked ‘superbeat’ the Leopards ran at either 28,800 beats per hour, with 22, 24 or 26 jewels, or at 36,000 beats per hour with 28, 31 or 32 jewels.

At the top of the Leopard tree is the Chronometer, tuned to Citizen’s ‘official’ certification, with a 36,000 bph movement of course and initially with 28 jewels. I’ve also seen examples with either 31 or 32 jewels, which may have been sold in export markets rather than in Japan.

Although part of the Leopard family, i.e. using the same movements, the Chronometer is graced with its own unique dial logo and a case back medallion in an Art Deco style:

SONY DSC

My example features smart black hands with open centres over a brushed dial, and is marked as an officially certified chronometer. The beat rate is marked under the applied logo. On some models the dial is marked ‘Super Beat 10’ (i.e. 10 beats per second). Two movement versions were used, this is the 72 with date and day, the other is the 74 with date only. The gold medallion on the case back is surrounded by typical markings – this one shows production in May 1970 and a case number of 4-720300:

The medallion is not perfect, and although hard to see, there is a spot on the dial. The seller of this one also described some sort of auto winding problem, so I got this one cheaply (for one of these!).

The crown has the older style ‘C’ signature, and is a good size for winding – these hand wind of course – and they ‘hack’, i.e. the watch is stopped when the crown is fully out so that the time can be set precisely (see top pic). Date is quick-set, with the day set by winding back and forth at 12 o’clock:

The ‘Leopard’ Chronometer  had only a short production, and they are a sought after model. I believe they were replaced with the ‘Highness’ models which, although still very desirable watches, don’t quite have the same special character:

I’m holding back on movement shots in this post because my Chronometer has been to see Brian aka 31 Jewels for a full service and to resolve the problem – and it was a significant one! His work on it will be featured later on his restoration pages.

It is running perfectly now, and is a pleasure to own and wear 🙂

This Week’s Featured Watch #72 – Super Deluxe Date

Citizen made higher end versions of some their mainstream models, designating them ‘super’ with enhanced finish/features and more factory adjustment for greater accuracy. My last ‘Featured Watch’ was such a model, the Super version of the Crystal Date. This week I feature a super variant of Citizen’s first really successful watch – the Deluxe.

The hand-winding Deluxe was launched in 1958, with movement 2B/9200 and was Citizen’s first watch to achieve sales of over ¥100million. In the same year the Super Deluxe (https://sweep-hand.org/2011/05/09/this-weeks-featured-watch-3/) was also launched. Some years later, in 1965, Citizen added a further version to the Super Deluxe, using an enhanced version of the Homer 1810 movement, which added a date complication, and was designated 1850, 1851 & 1860. So, if you compare the movement shots you’ll see this later model uses a different design of movement rather than the original 9200 as seen in the Super Deluxe.

The case and dial is typical of the mid to late 1960s designs, and of course 3 applied stars are added to the dial to indicate the ‘super’ quality level. This model only came with 25 jewels as far as I know:

The case back is what I call the transitional type with the later style of general markings but the earlier model/case number of HODS2802 – production was in July 1967:

And here we see the upgraded finish on the movement of this Super version, with the immediately recognisable ‘Homer’ architecture. The movement also has ‘hacking’ or ‘second setting’, i.e. the watch s stopped when the crown is pulled out to set the time, allowing precise time setting :

This example is running perfectly, with no adjustment needed after over a week’s wear. Very nice 🙂

This date version is relatively scarce and well worth getting hold of if you can – a nice quality hand winder that is probably not far off its Chrono Master sibling using the same movement (designated 1870 in the Chrono Master). The dial, hands and markers look pretty well the same too. You could argue the Super Deluxe is better since it has the gold plated movement, not found in any of the Chrono Masters….

Nice Review of A Chrono Master

I’ve added a link to the blog of ‘musingsofawatchaddict’ who has a hand winding Chrono Master which he has reviewed and compared to similar offerings from the same period by Seiko. Interesting read – thanks Musings’ 🙂

The link is in the ‘blogroll’ on the right of this page for future use, and here it is as well for now: https://musingsofawatchaddict.wordpress.com/2016/01/17/citizen-chrono-master-citizens-answer-to-grand-seikoking-seiko/

Wim, are you out there?

Hi Wim (‘WVE’) – I hope that you are watching 🙂 I saw the Citizen only thread on the Dutch ‘horlogeforum’ and I would like to contact you about one of your watches. The email address I have for you is an old one I think. I got a ‘couldn’t be delivered’ message when I tried.

So if you see this please get in touch – you may still have my email address, or reply in a comment here. Thanks.

Stephen

Update: Found him! 🙂

Citizen 52-0110 Diver – Blue Bezel Insert…or Faded Black? Solved!

With thanks to Bert and Nick – Bert who was prepared to take the bezel off his diver and Nick who suggested it – we have an answer to the question….was the bezel blue  originally, or was it black and has faded? Well, as they say a picture (or three) paints a thousand words:

Looks black to me…..

Thanks Bert for being prepared to take your watch apart, and for the photos.

Citizen 52-0110 Diver – Blue Bezel Insert…or Faded Black?

If you’ve read the Diver Page (https://sweep-hand.org/citizens-vintage-divers-1962-to-1980/), you’ll have seen some commentary in the 52-0110 section about dial variations and questions about whether there was ever a blue bezel insert for this (and other 150m divers). The conclusion was that it’s more likely that the blue colour is the result of UV fading of the original black insert, even though there has been an after-market blue insert available as well as black ones. Bert has sent me a nice photo  of his 52-0110 with blue insert- I particularly like the background 😉 :

52-0110bluebezelbert_zpsh6muorey

I’m interested to know what other people think – is this a blue bezel insert, or is it faded black? Bert noted that his is from 1977, as is the one shown via a link in the diver article. What do you think?

Last Watch of 2015 – Challenge Timer, aka ‘Bullhead’

My last purchase of 2015 arrived yesterday – it’s a ‘bullhead’, but one of the 67-9011 Challenge Timers that is not seen too often. It has a dark grey dial, with a multi-coloured minutes register and uniquely for the 8110A chronographs, a printed ‘Citizen’ logo rather than an applied one:
